KIT START SPOTLIGHT: Tania Freimuth, cinematographer

Tania Freimuth is an award-winning cinematographer whose work spans films and television dramas on Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer and Sky. She is also a published photographer, educator and visual artist, with professional memberships including the GBCT, Illuminatrix DoPs, BAFTA, and she serves as a Canon EMEA Pro Ambassador. Narrative fiction storytelling is at the heart of her work, with credits including Dream Big, Verdigris and The Contestant. She also lectures in Cinematography at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Tania tells us about her journey into the camera department and how working in a kit room helped shape her career.

Tania began her path as a film loader on commercials gradually moving into second-assistant and then first assistant roles on film dramas. Like many new entrants, she knocked on countless doors, writing letters, sending emails, making phone calls and taking on odd jobs just to stay afloat. But it was her experience working in a kit rental room that truly set her up for the future.

How the kit room shaped her career:
Working in a rental house gave Tania hands-on access to every piece of equipment she’d later use on set. Sometimes she drove vans or helped with bookings. Crucially, she met local crew she would go on to work with, and as she became more knowledgeable, the kit room would put her forward when productions were short of a 1st or 2nd AC. Just as important were the relationships that formed and the trust that developed, something she describes as invaluable. Overall, the rental house played a pivotal role in helping her get her camera department career on track, and it’s an experience she says she owes a lot to.

Barriers & breaking them down:
Gender bias presented persistent challenges, from doubts about physical ability to outright sexist comments and obstructive behaviour on set.
Tania pushed through by working hard, choosing collaborators carefully, and building a professional reputation that earned respect. Becoming part of a strong team helped shift the landscape.
